Treeless Paper Made from Elephant Dung

Karl Wald, the entre”poo”neur behind Mr. Ellie Pooh has us, along with a bevy of journalists, obsessing over his eco-friendly line of exotic gifts, stationery, office supplies and other sustainable paper products, all partially made from elephant dung.

Oh, and if you’re thinking, “elephant dung paper – this stuff must stink,” nope, – it’s odorless.

Why harvest dung?

Since an elephant’s diet is all vegetarian, the waste produced is basically raw cellulose. Thoroughly cleaned and processed, the cellulose is converted into a uniquely beautiful textured product, marketed as “Ellie Pooh Paper”.

All of the products are handmade and are made out of 100% recycled paper made from 75% elephant dung fibers and 25% post consumer paper using natural vegetative binding agents in the paper-making process and water-soluble salt dyes for coloring.

Through their sales, they support “project peace paper,” a Sri Lankan conservation program aimed at providing jobs in areas where elephants are being destroyed. Together with their paper partners (Maximus, located in Colombo, Sri Lanka), they have grown and developed paper facilities placed in human/elephant conflict areas of Sri Lanka.
